5 Reasons You Should Visit Colombia at Least Once in Lifetime

Colombia is a fast growing tourist destination. The South American country is one of the most popular stops on the “Gringo Trail” through the continent, and is quickly becoming a must visit for travelers around the world.

Experiences in nature and culture, among others, in addition to being the first Latin American country to launch a tourism biosafety certification that promotes travel and minimizes the risk of the COVID-19 virus spreading are some of the reasons to visit the South American country.

Colombia can’t wait to receive tourists again. During this isolation the country has been preparing to welcome travelers from all over the world once more. Colombia's current campaign says, "We'll meet soon," so people can get in touch with the invaluable and immense natural and cultural wealth that the country has.

“We believe that when tourism recovers its strength and full potential, travelers will be interested in nature and cultural experiences that really connect them with the destination. In this sense, Colombia has a wonderful offer and should be in everyone’s bucket list”, explained Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia, the governmental entity in charge of promoting the country as an international tourist destination.

Colombia is working on maintaining the trust of travelers, with the support of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and is the first country in Latin America to launch a biosafety certification for the tourism sector. ProColombia shares 5 reasons to choose Colombia as the ideal destination for your first trip once the tourism industry recovers:

    1. Colombia is one of the countries with the most natural wealth; in fact, it is the second most biodiverse country in the world after Brazil.
In addition, it is the destination with the most bird species on the planet, it has the largest number of orchids, and it has the majority of the world’s paramo ecosystems.
These characteristics make Colombia the perfect destination for experiences that connect travelers with nature through responsible and sustainable activities such as bird watching, whale watching, ecotourism, adventure tourism, and community tourism, among others.

    2. Colombia is the country of 1,000 rhythms. Through its music the traveler finds the opportunity to have not only a physical journey, but also an intellectual, emotional and spiritual journey. The country dances to the rhythm of cumbia, champeta, reggaetón, salsa or vallenato, but also enjoy the traditional notes of the Colombian Pacific and the infinite music of the east of its geography.

    3. Colombian gastronomy is a cultural expression as colorful as its people and its traditions, festivities and landscapes.
Some Colombian restaurants are now part of prestigious lists such as the 50 best Latin American restaurants. Those places are creating extraordinary dishes by experimenting with traditional and ancestral ingredients in increasingly innovative ways
In addition, the UNESCO Creative Cities Network includes two Colombian cities, Popayán and Buenaventura, because of their experience and strength around traditional cuisine.

    4. The country has 19 elements on UNESCO lists that recognize the heritage of humanity.
On the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage there are Colombian events such as The Black and White Carnival that takes place in Pasto, Marimba music and traditional songs of the South Pacific of Colombia, the Holy Week Processions of Popayán and the Barranquilla Carnival, among others.

And on the list of World Heritage Sites there are places such as the Walls and Monuments of Cartagena de Indias, the Historic Center of Santa Cruz de Mompox, the Archaeological Park of San Agustín in Huila and the Sanctuary of Fauna and Flora Malpelo in the Pacific, among others.

    5. Colombians always have a smile to offer and this has become its unique way to welcome visitors.
The kindness, warmth and passion of Colombians are qualities that a tourist will find in all corners of the country. People are creative, positive, recursive and with an infinite capacity for work. Colombians will captivate any heart by offering their friendship from the first moment.
