The union has also urged well-meaning citizens to criticize
the government for the way it is managing the operation of universities and
education in the nation as a whole.
This was said by Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the national
president of ASUU, in a conversation with the Vanguard on Tuesday.
This comes right after Prof. Nimi Briggs, the chair of the
committee the FG established to renegotiate the 2009 deal with ASUU, stated
that he would not be aware of the reason for the delay in the government
announcing its position on the report that was given to it.
"The Briggs Committee promised to report back to the
government and get back to the union right away when we met with them about a
month ago and gave them our submission. We haven't heard anything from their
side up until this point. It demonstrates how lightly they approach the
subject.
"They stopped paying us in March, yet we didn't pass
away as a result. We simply want Nigerians to perceive this as a conflict that
involves us all. believe education should be a right for every individual and
that our educational system needs to be fully supported with upgraded
facilities.
When the right thing is done, we will all benefit and our
society will be better for it, he said. The ball is in their court.
When asked what is delaying the government's reaction to
ASUU's demands and its position on his committee's findings, Briggs responded,
"I don't know."
He said that the committee had completed its work and turned
in its report to the proper parties.
"Whether or not we act on the report is beyond our
purview. Additionally, we cannot compel anyone to do any action. Our homework
is finished. Mr. Ben Goong, Director of Public Affairs for the Federal Ministry
of Education, responded that he was not permitted to remark on any matter about
ASUU when asked what the FG was doing about the report.
