The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has revealed that N18 billion will be disbursed to six public universities under its Special High Impact Intervention.
The Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund
(TETFund), Sonny Echono, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja,
yesterday.
Giving a breakdown on the 2023 intervention budget of N320
billion that was recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari, he said N1
billion each would be given to six polytechnics and six colleges of education
across the country, as over 95 per cent of the money would go directly to
beneficiary tertiary institutions.
Echono said the remaining five per cent of the allocation
would be used for staff salaries and allowances, project monitoring and zonal
capital projects.
According to him, 62 per cent (N198 billion) of the total
disbursement constitutes the institutions’ yearly direct disbursement, while 20
per cent (N64.2 billion) will be used for special disbursement.
The special intervention is usually at the discretion of the
Board of Trustees (BoT), for which allocations are zonal-based and are done
equitably by the decision of the board as enshrined in the enabling Act.
It seeks to massively inject funds into select tertiary
institutions for a major turnaround through programme upgrade and improvement
in the teaching and learning environment.
The disbursement plan, Echono said, is to give each
university in the six geo-political zones N3 billion, while N1 billion will go
to each polytechnic and College of Education (COE) from each of the six
geo-political zones.
He said: “For this year, the special impact will be given to
six universities, viz Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State (North
Central), Federal University, Wukari in Taraba State (North East), Federal
University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State (North West), Imo State University of
Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (South East), Edo State University (South
South) and Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State (South West).”
“The beneficiary polytechnics are Federal Polytechnic, Offa,
Kwara State; Federal Polytechnic, Gombe; Federal Polytechnic Kabo, Kano State;
Anambra State Polytechnic; Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny and Oyo
State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora.
Plateau State COE, Federal COE in Yola, Federal COE in
Zaria, Enugu State COE, Delta State COE and Taiye Solarin COE are to get N1
billion each, Echono said.
The ES further said the Fund was aware of the challenges
facing institutions, especially kidnapping children and disruption of academic
activities.
On special disbursement, Echono disclosed N6 billion had
been allocated to institutions in security-prone areas, especially those with
internal security challenges.
He added that N500 million had been allocated to select COEs
in the six geopolitical zones for micro teaching laboratory.
