The Super Eagles bowed out of the continental showpiece
after going down 1-0 to the Eagles of Carthage of Tunisia at the Stade Roumdé
Adija, Garoua in Cameroon.
Youssef Msakni’s 47th minute goal from 25 yards out was
enough to send the Eagles packing from the tournament.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Eguavoen
declared that he has decided to return to his role as the Technical Director of
the NFF.
“What happens next is that; I’m the interim coach and
Technical Director of the NFF, I will go back to my position and allow the
Federation make a decision on the way forward.” Eguavoen said.
Nigeria were the only side to have picked nine points in the
group stage having earned victories against Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau
while Tunisia walked into the knockouts on thin ropes as they were one of the
tournament’s best losers.
However, a sub-par Eagles reduced to 10 men at some point
could not display a show similar to their Group stage heroics and antics.
Attentions have now been turned to the all-important World
Cup qualifying two-legged playoff between the Super Eagles and the Black Stars
of Ghana in March this year and Austin Eguavoen said he has charged the boys to
ensure they book the ticket to the Mundial in Qatar.
Austin Eguavoen took over as an interim coach following the
sacking of former manager Gernot Rhor early December last year and it was then
said that after the tournament, he will leave the position for the new manager
appointed.
A foreign coach in Jose Peseiro was named to go to Cameroon
as an observer and take over after Cameroon’21.
However, following the group stage exploits of Eguavoen, the
NFF have declared that Jose Peseiro isn’t stamped yet as Nigeria’s new coach
raising the possibility that Austin Eguavoen could take Nigeria to the World
Cup.
As things stand, Eguavoen has left the role but a
clarification needs to come from the NFF as to who will hold reins come March.
