Gold Lilies Productions has unveiled the official teaser for Osamede, a groundbreaking Nigerian historical fantasy film that promises to redefine African cinema. Set in the mystical world of the 1897 Benin Empire, the film follows a young orphan girl destined to become the supernatural guardian of the sacred Aruosa stone, intertwining fantasy with rich cultural heritage and African mythology.
Directed by James Omokwe, known for his work on acclaimed titles like Itura, Ajoche, and Cheta M, Osamede introduces audiences to a visually immersive universe where the spiritual and historical collide. The film’s story centers on Osamede, a girl whose awakening powers mark her as “the chosen one” in a narrative framed by ancient prophecies, supernatural forces, and a kingdom on the brink of transformation.
A Story Rooted in Myth and Womanhood
The teaser offers a glimpse into the mystical journey of Osamede, played by Ivie Okujaye Egboh, as she confronts her destiny. With a tagline that declares, “She’s the chosen one. Her power awakens. An ode to womanhood and African identity,” the film sets a tone of empowerment, resilience, and cultural pride.
Supporting cast members include Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi (My Father’s Shadow), and veteran filmmaker Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen. Their performances are expected to bolster the film’s emotional and cultural depth.
A Visual and Cultural Landmark
Combining epic visual effects with authentic storytelling, Osamede revives the grandeur and mysticism of the ancient Benin Kingdom, celebrating its spiritual legacy while pushing the boundaries of African genre cinema.
Executive producer Lilian Olubi emphasized the film’s intent to bring African narratives to the global stage. “This teaser captures the essence of what we’re bringing to global audiences,” she said. “It’s African mythology told through the lens of epic fantasy, celebrating both our heritage and the power of African women.”
The film received strong acclaim following its industry debut at the Cannes Marché du Film in May 2025. Kenneth Gyang, director of Netflix’s Òlòtūré, described it as a “beautiful film” after attending its premiere.
Global Release and Distribution
Osamede will be theatrically released in Q4 2025, with Nile Entertainment Group—led by renowned executive Moses Babatope—handling global distribution. Known for securing international deals with major studios like Disney, Netflix, and Warner Bros, the company is positioning Osamede as a global cinematic milestone.
“Osamede sets a new standard for African cinema,” said Babatope. “Rarely does one find such a film that honours our cultural heritage while delivering the epic storytelling that international audiences crave.”
Ushering in a New Era
With its potent blend of history, mythology, and cinematic spectacle, Osamede is more than a film—it’s a statement. As African filmmakers continue to explore new creative frontiers, Osamede stands at the forefront of a movement that reclaims and reimagines the continent’s stories for a global audience.
As anticipation builds toward its theatrical debut, Osamede is being hailed as a bold new chapter in African filmmaking, one that promises to captivate viewers around the world with its depth, artistry, and unapologetic celebration of African identity.
