The 32-year-old artiste, known for his soulful ballads and love-themed songs, shared his views during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo.
Asked about settling down, Chike responded:
“In my personal opinion, in fact, I think it’s a stupid step to get married, that’s my opinion. Marriage is not a priority for me at the moment.”
The Running (To You) crooner, however, admitted that his happiness is tied to financial stability rather than romance.
“For me to be happy, to be honest, I need a lot of money. This is not even carnal. I won’t lie to you, I like money. I want money,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Chike disclosed that he never imagined music would become his career until after university.
“I would say maybe right after my university, I knew music is what I’ll do for a living. Before then, I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me.”
The singer recounted his early financial struggles, revealing that he had to take acting roles to survive.
“It was a tough part, I even had to start acting for like two years,” he said.
Chike also recalled how his mother once asked if he had joined a cult when his career began to take off, and how some friends abandoned him when he sought financial help to organise his first concert.
“I remember one time when I was about to do my show. It didn’t even cost up to ₦400,000 because a lot of things were favours. I reached out to my friends, the ones I used to hang out with, but instead of just telling me no, some stopped picking my calls.
“In the end, it was a female friend who came through. For the first time, I was comfortable enough to let out my emotions and I cried that day. She just looked at me and said, ‘Chike, don’t worry, I’ll give you the money, just go and concentrate.’ That was how the show happened.”
Chike began his professional career in 2015 after appearing on Project Fame West Africa. He later finished as first runner-up on The Voice Nigeria in 2016 and went on to release Fancy, his debut single, the same year.
Since then, he has grown into one of Nigeria’s most recognisable voices, earning a reputation for heartfelt lyrics and captivating performances — even as he continues to chart his path on his own terms.
