Tottenham Hotspur has strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at French forward Mathys Tel following the club’s UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

The 20-year-old striker, who is Black, was one of two Spurs players who failed to convert during the penalty shootout, which ended 4-3 in PSG’s favor after a 2-2 draw in regulation. Tel’s miss came after he stepped up bravely in the shootout but sent his effort wide.

In a sharply worded statement, the North London club denounced those responsible for targeting the player online. “We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat,” the club said. “Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards — hiding behind anonymous user names and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.”

Tottenham confirmed it will cooperate with football authorities and social media companies to pursue “the strongest possible action” against perpetrators. The statement concluded with a show of solidarity: “We stand with you, Mathys.”

Tel, who signed permanently from Bayern Munich this summer after a loan spell last season, entered the match as a substitute in the 79th minute with Spurs leading 2-0. PSG clawed back to level the game, forcing the shootout where Tottenham ultimately fell short.

The incident once again highlights the persistent issue of online racist abuse in football, particularly targeting young players after high-profile matches. Spurs’ strong stance mirrors a wider push within the sport to hold social media platforms accountable and ensure players are better protected.
