Congratulations have been pouring in for Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa following her announcement that she is expecting her first child.

The 40-year-old radio and television host revealed the news on Wednesday, August 13, by posting a video of her baby bump on Instagram. She described the pregnancy as “the biggest project of my life, the highest calling ever,” expressing deep gratitude for what she called a testimony of God’s perfect timing.

Reflecting on her journey to motherhood, Makinwa said the pregnancy fulfilled a prophetic declaration she made at the start of 2025. In an emotional caption, she noted that while her audience has known her in many roles over the years, they would now see her as a mother.

“I’ve worn so many hats over the years, but this one tops everything and I’m so humbled to be chosen,” she wrote. “You’ve been with me from the start — the girl you met on radio, the brand you’ve supported all these years — and this victory is major. You get to see me as a mother; I get to raise my own. Hallelujah!”

Her announcement was met with an outpouring of goodwill from fellow celebrities and fans alike. Stars such as Funke Akindele, Kemi Adetiba, Iyabo Ojo, and Falz were among the first to send congratulatory messages.

Who Is Toke Makinwa?

Toke Makinwa is one of Nigeria’s most recognisable media personalities, known for her work as a radio and television host, actress, brand influencer, vlogger, businesswoman, and author.

She began her career in broadcasting with several radio stations and gained nationwide attention in 2014 as the host of a popular morning show on Rhythm FM. Over the years, she has built a reputation as one of Africa’s most influential female voices in the media, entertainment, and fashion industries.

Born in November 1984 in Lagos, Makinwa faced significant personal challenges early in life. She lost both parents in a house fire as a child and was raised by guardians alongside her siblings. She earned her first degree from the University of Lagos.

In 2014, she married fitness coach and entrepreneur Maje Ayida, but the marriage ended in a highly publicised divorce in 2016 following allegations of infidelity. She chronicled her experiences, including the heartbreak and her journey of healing, in her memoir On Becoming.

Speaking to BBC Focus Africa about the book, Makinwa described it as a candid reflection on pain, resilience, and transformation — themes that have defined much of her personal and professional journey.
